    The map shows the most-affected areas. Oddly
    southern Maryland seems to be the worst - but
    note S.Carolina and even the area around the
    Kennedy Space Center ......

    Moist soil continues to break down and compact.
    Organics become simpler, sometimes volatile,
    organics and even silica grains eventually
    crack and split.

    Build heavy stuff on top of it and the compression
    rate is even faster.

    ANYway ... do NOT rely on coastlines being "forever".
    Nature bangs away at even rocky coasts, and makes
    sandy coasts move around and shrink. Human attempts
    at intervention often seem to make things worse/faster.
