Moist soil continues to break down and compact.
Organics become simpler, sometimes volatile,
organics and even silica grains eventually
crack and split.
Build heavy stuff on top of it and the compression
rate is even faster.
ANYway ... do NOT rely on coastlines being "forever".
Nature bangs away at even rocky coasts, and makes
sandy coasts move around and shrink. Human attempts
at intervention often seem to make things worse/faster.
