Teachers are limiting discussions about politics,
social issues
Teachers in states with no restrictions still limited
conversation
18 states have enacted laws limiting class discussion
on certain topics. Teachers said they were afraid of
offending parents
. . .
Ya know ... this may not be a bad thing. Esp at the
grade-school level. Some schools had become pretty
much far-leftist indoctrination centers - with kids
far too young and inexperienced to know anything
other than what they were told.
This ALSO applies to those further-RIGHT schools.
There are far more USEFUL subjects for grade-schoolers
to learn. Try the "3 R's" and related. Politics is
subjective at best, propaganda/indoctrination at worst.
I'm old enough to remember the Cold War indoctrination.
The textbook was "Americanism -vs- Communism" and the
class was mandatory.
So SKIP the damned political "discussions". That's not
the mission of public schools and the millions of
tax-payers who may have very DIFFERENT politics.

For conservatives EVERYTHING is political.
The Holocaust, MLK, evolution, slavery,
race riots, Covid, the Civil War, climate
change, vaccinations, Mr Rogers, Anne Frank,
Sesame Street, the pyramids, rainbows.

Is there something wrong with teaching plain, old fashioned civics?

Some of us remember Sputnik and the alarm over
"the Russians are ahead of us in education!". What
followed was an overhaul of education, the nation
went on a crash course of teaching STEM courses.
Gone were the conversations about god and prayer
and evolution and Ye Floode. Parents "offended" by
pure science were pushed aside, all us students
learned the same science and the same math and
the same history. Eisenhower and then Kennedy
pushed it with a wartime urgency, and in those
red-scare times no one dared disagree.
Irrelevant.
I took Civics in 1968 in the depths of the Cold War. Learned to write
a check, balance my checkbook, how the government was constructed and
went through the Constitution a section at a time over the course of
the school year.
