The scary reason why Australia is addicted to high immigration -
    here's what the alternative is

Australia relies on high immigration for working age population

This means the government has more workers for income tax

Australia is addicted to high immigration so it can have more
working-age people to tax as couples have fewer children and
the population ages, a government report says.

Treasury has warned the alternative to high immigration would
be even higher income taxes, as those over 70 made up a bigger
share of the population in coming decades.

The Institute of Public Affairs, a libertarian think tank,
calculated a record 31 per cent of Australia's population
was now born overseas - more than double the U.S. level of
15 per cent and the UK's 14 per cent.

It's also significantly higher than Canada's 21 per cent
and New Zealand's 29 per cent.

    . . .

The 1st-world curse - possibly doom.

I've writ on this a number of times recently. However
this little article puts some real numbers - and
    reasons - to things.

And if you think the US South-of-the-Border thing is
    an administrative accident ......

The Truth - once countries reach 1st-world status
the perception that large families are needed for
security goes away. Children are a pain to deal
with, so the reproduction rate goes down sharply.

Alas this soon results in an "inverted demographic",
a lot more older people than young people. I'm not
aware of ANY kind of economy that can survive with
that arrangement. Lots of younger people are still
needed for various levels of hands-on labor and for
the tax revenues that generates. The young immigrants
support the smaller and smaller native pop (at least
until they don't WANT to do that anymore).

This issue seems especially acute in Australia, with
far more immigrants than anyone else.

Japan, SK and to a degree even China are also coming
to suffer from the demographic crisis in that part of
the world. Similar issues in the EU and USA, just not
quite as bad, yet. I suspect Japan will be the first
to seriously decline because of this - seems like
nobody (at least in the urban pop, which is the bulk
of the pop) wants to make babies, or even make
whoopie. Very odd - and a fast-track to national
    dissolution.

Japan believes that Robot Helpers will somehow save
the day. Alas, they've believed that for a long time
now and reliable, flexible, safe, Robot Helpers are
still a LONG way off. And what would they support
anyway - a pop almost entirely of 80+ citizens ?
Some ethnic Japanese will persist - mostly from
the more rural/isolated areas. However "Japan" as
    an entity/culture .... um .........

As for the USA - it WILL become a 'hispanic' civ
eventually. This is not the great thing, their
system - still basically the old Spanish patron/
peon system - is a big part of the reason all
those people came here in the first place.
Europe - well - Islamic by and large .....

Sorry, but even a "Handmaid" thing will not
    generate nearly enough 'native' inhabitants
fast enough. We're seeing the future take shape
right now. Of course those 'immigrant' pops
that reach 1st-world status - SAME THING WILL
HAPPEN. I wonder what the final civ will be ?
No more 'immigrants' = collapse = back to the
dark ages. THEN there'll be more babies ...
    but they won't be happy.

As for Oz - look at it as the pattern we all will
soon follow. All that was Oz will soon become
    Malaysian/Indonesian. A 30+ percent 'immigrant'
    pop guarentees that.
