BBC Broadcast :
Foresters in the UK estimate that nearly 500,000
giant redwoods are now growing there - as opposed to
only about 80,000 in their native California USA
habitat.
The coolish/dampish UK climate appears to be ideal
for the huge trees.
There is also great interest in them because they can
lock-up SO much carbon for long periods and grow
rather quickly. They get so tall that, so long as
not planted too thickly, other kinds of native
trees/veggies can grow beneath them.
The broadcast showed that some of the trees are
already very large - maybe 4 feet near the base.
When it comes time to start harvesting some of
these trees, note that Redwood tends to be quite
resistant to rot ... again very useful for some
construction needs in the UK.
It would seem that some parts of Norway and
Sweden might also be suitable for cultivation.
