Chipmaker Intel says it is cutting 15% of its huge workforce—about
15,000 jobs—as it tries to turn its business around to compete
with more successful rivals like Nvidia and AMD.
In a memo to staff, Intel Corp. CEO Pat Gelsinger said Thursday
the company plans to save $10 billion in 2025.
"Simply put, we must align our cost structure with our new
operating model and fundamentally change the way we operate,"
he wrote
. . .
He plans to get "lean and mean" like AMD and ARM.
Intel makes great CPU chips, no question, but it
is now an 'old' company and has a lot of fat
around the middle.
Nvidia chips are the de-facto standard for "AI"
applications, but that's "specialty" and in the
end you will have a more conventional CPU to
interface with the "AI" apps. "AI" can possibly
EMULATE a general-purpose CPU, but the performance
will always be significantly less than a dedicated
unit.
One potential problem with the new Intel plan
however - 'morale'. Such massive restructuring
and back-stabbing does NOT inspire confidence
even amongst (today's) survivors. It's no
longer "all for one / one for all" but
"everyone for themselves".
"Downsizing - for 'efficiency'" has a sketchy
track record.
My GUESS is that this will lead to internal
political stresses and territorial issues
that will ultimately destroy the corp. Five
years maybe ? Then it will be split up and
the bloody remains sold to the highest bidders.
