The report recommended evacuation "based on the cracked…and
loose condition of load carrying concrete components, the
extensive corrosion and section loss of steel re-enforcement
with over 90% section loss at one location."
. . .
The condo has been evacuated - probably a total loss
for unit owners ... and those things ARE pricey !
According to advertising pix, looks like this was a
collection of units - some maybe four floors high
while one looked to be eight or nine.
Anyway, slap-up construction, right on the beach,
salt water and mist eats eats eats away ....
There were a zillion of these things put up in the
70s-80s ... as fast and cheap as possible. Ignore
those "inspection" certs. They were big money real
fast for the cities/counties. From the Carolina's
all the way around the gulf coast - they just
banged 'em up and the builders left town or kept
changing names/owners so there'd be nobody to blame
when blame came due.
The huge collapse in Miami a couple of years ago
prompted a state law requiring an extensive
state inspection after like 30 years. Only about
30% of such buildings HAVE been inspected alas,
not enough expert manpower.
In any case, the Miami thing was NOT unique ... it
was just the FIRST to fall.
