The âGuaranteed Income for Trans Peopleâ (GIFT) program will aid transgender residents of San Francisco with a monthly income of
$1,200.
âOur Guaranteed Income Programs allow us to help our residents when
they need it most as part of our Cityâs economic recovery and our commitment to creating a more just city for all,â said San Francisco
Mayor London Breed.
Critics say the controversial program unfairly discriminates against non-trans Americans in need and encourages people to simply identify
as transgender to receive benefits. (Poll: Is CNN âFake Newsâ? VOTE)
Moreover, the entire concept of guaranteed income is destructive as individuals are disincentivized to become working members of society.
There are reportedly 97 genders to choose from in the program.
âWe know that our trans communities experience much higher rates of
poverty and discrimination, so this program will target support to
lift individuals in this community up,â he added.
âWe will keep building on programs like this to provide those in the greatest need with the financial resources and services to help them thrive,â he added.
Pau Crego, Executive Director of the San Francisco Office of
Transgender Initiatives, said, âEven with our rich history of trans advocacy, we see that trans San Franciscans experience poverty at exponentially higher rates compared to the general population.â
âWhile in other parts of the country and the world trans people are targeted by institutions and legislators, in San Francisco, we move
towards progress and justice by investing in our most vulnerable residents.â
