WENTZVILLE, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A man is in custody following a fatal shooting in Wentzville overnight.
Police said they responded to the 1300 block of Hidden Valley Drive for a reported shooting involving two men. Officers were able to locate the
victim, Leon Anderson, 39, of St. Louis., who was pronounced dead due to gunshot injuries.
Wentzville Public Information Officer Jacob Schmidt said the shooting
stemmed from a domestic incident inside an apartment where a woman lived. Schmidt said the two men then went outside, and the suspect shot the victim near the front porch. The suspect then fled the scene.
Carlos Hood of St. Louis County was charged with first-degree murder and
armed criminal action in the incident. A probable cause statement against
Hood states he was inside a residence with the woman when another man showed up.
Investigators said Hood had been dating his girlfriend for about a week.
Hood and the girlfriend were inside her Wentzville home when police said Anderson knocked on her door.
The woman told police Anderson was her on-and-off boyfriend for about three years.
When no one answered the door, the woman told police Anderson forced his way inside the home through her bedroom window.
The probable cause statement says there was an altercation between the two
men, and then the victim and the woman. Hood then shot the man. Anderson collapsed outside after he was shot.
“Commotion, fighting and then I heard escalation,” Neighbor Matthew Mason said. “Then I heard shots fired.”
The statement reads that the woman called 911, and Hood left the residence.
As John Bockhoff attempted to pull into the neighborhood his girlfriend and kids live in Tuesday night, he saw Wentzville police everywhere.
“I want to know what’s going on,” Bockhoff said. “I’d like to see my family
and my kids are in there.”
Police established a perimeter around the apartment complex, utilizing Metro Air Support and K9 officers in an attempt to find the suspect overnight.
Police said that around 4 a.m., a neighbor nearby alerted them to motion on their doorbell camera. When police looked at the video, they confirmed that
it was the suspect. Police say that footage allowed them to close the
perimeter set up to search, and Hood was taken into custody not far from the scene without incident.
“There was a resident here that notified us of some Ring motion they had,
and officers identified the suspect through that video,” Schmidt with Wentzville Police said.
Mason has lived across the street from where this happened for the last year and said it’s not the first time he’s heard fighting from the home.
“It’s terrifying,” Mason said. “You don’t think this would actually happen.
Words can’t even describe it. There’s no way to explain that. The world is gonna escalate into more problems if we don’t come and band together and actually be civil.”
When First Alert 4 returned to the scene more than 12 hours later, blood
still stained the pavement outside the home.
“I don’t like the fact that when my kids come outside to play, there is a blood stain from a dead body 50 feet away,” Bockhoff said.
Neighbors tell First Alert 4 they do think Wentzville is a safe community
but have growing concerns about this neighborhood.
“I feel like the neighborhood is just going downhill from here,” Mason said.
In October 2023, another deadly shooting happened in the same neighborhood.
“I don’t want to say it’s a bad neighborhood because not every apple is bad
but you just don’t know who you’re talking to,” Bockhoff said. “It can be
scary.”
According to Missouri Casenet, Hood is not known to have a criminal history
in the state. Hood is being held without bond.
