A teenager was shot and two people were arrested Saturday evening in
Downtown after crowds of teenagers fought in the street at The Pike
Outlets, prompting the mall to close early, police said.
Around 6:30 p.m. officers responded to the area of East First Street and
The Promenade where they found a teenage boy suffering from a gunshot
wound to his lower body, Long Beach Police Department Sgt. Bradford Stein
said.
The teenager was taken to a local hospital in stable condition. A shell
casing was found at the scene, but suspect information and a motive are
still unknown, police said.
The shooting happened a few hours after the Long Beach Police Department
posted on social media that they were “aware of a large group gathering
planned for this afternoon in The Pike,” but did not initially specify the nature of the gathering. In response, police increased patrols in the
area.
According to a statement released Saturday evening by the Downtown Long
Beach Alliance, social media posts indicated a group of teenagers planned
to meet up at nearby Lincoln Park to organize a “smash and grab” theft
event.
Stores at The Pike Outlets closed their shops around 5 p.m. out of an
abundance of caution to both protect employees and merchandise from the
crowd, Stein said. Many shops in the outlet typically stay open as late as
11 p.m. on Saturdays.
Just before 6 p.m., officers saw a fight between a woman and a teenage
girl near the outlets at Bay Street and Aquarium Way, Stein said. It’s
unclear what led up to the altercation, but both the girl and the woman
were arrested.
Video footage posted by KTLA shows the two get into a fight with dozens of people and teenagers surrounding them, with some filming the scene and
others yelling.
Dozens of teens then ran north into the downtown core after officers
attempted to disperse the large group, according to the DLBA’s statement.
Soon after, the shooting occurred.
As of 9:30 p.m., police had received no reports of smash-and-grab-style
theft in the area, Stein said.
The investigations into both the shooting and the suspected smash-and-grab attempt were ongoing. It is unknown at this time if there is a connection between the two.
The Pine Avenue and Pike Outlet areas will see increased police presence throughout Saturday evening, DLBA said.
This shooting comes less than a day after a group of men were shot at
during an altercation near Pine Avenue late Friday evening. No injuries
were reported and the suspect fled before police arrived on scene.
Editor’s note: The story has been updated with more information from the
DLBA and police.
