NEW ORLEANS — Newly obtained photos from inside the Orleans Parish Jail
appears to show the physical breach that allowed 11 inmates to escape
Friday morning — and a handwritten message that adds a disturbing tone to
the incident.
The image, reviewed by WWL Louisiana, shows a large hole in the wall of
the facility with daylight clearly visible through the other side. Just
above the opening, someone had written in marker: “To (sic) easy lol.”
Photographs shared with WWL by a source familiar with the jail layout. The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office has not confirmed whether this was the
exact escape route used by the inmates.
The photos adds new urgency to questions already being asked by city
leaders and law enforcement about how such a large-scale escape could
happen — and go undetected for hours.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said the public wasn’t notified until roughly 10 a.m. Friday, hours after the facility’s 8:30 a.m. headcount
revealed the 11 men were missing.
At least one of the inmates has since been recaptured. Kendall Myles was arrested outside Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter Friday morning.
As of Friday afternoon, ten inmates remain at large. All are accused of
violent crimes.
This is a developing story. Stay with WWL Louisiana for continued coverage
and exclusive updates.
