The first time I tried to place this message my computer took a dive
so I don't know if it ever got possted so I'm sending it again.
This information below, is from a book by Henry Upson SIMS, called
"The Geneaology of the SIMS Family". It has been said that over the
years, as new evidence has surfaced and been proven and unproven, that
there are some errors conmtained in this book and that the information contained within should be regarded with some caution. Many SIMS/SYMES researchers have accepted this book as gospel and therefore may be perpetuating some certain "myths". I am making an attempt to retrace
some of the findings stated in this book in hopes to determine what is
fact and what is fiction. Of course, not all is erroneous, but enough conflicting and unproven information has been contained within to
warrent this new search. If anyone has information concerning any of
the persons mentioned below, I would very much appreciate your
contacting me so that I can confirm this information.
I'm researching the descendants of Thomas Symes of Barwick and his
wife Amye Bridges in Somerset, England. One of his sons was Capt.
George SYMES who lived in Antigua. George SYMES married Dorothy
EVERARD, the daughter of Thomas Everard, Gent (who may have been the
son of Charles Everard, Gov. of St. Christpher's a leeward island not
far from Antigua in 1651-2) and had at least four children:
Thomas SYMES Jr. of Barwick, Somerset (died 1682) M. Merriel Horner in Somerset.
Capt. John SYMES of Montserrat and Anitgua(b. 1680-d. 1687) married
Elizabeth Langton in Antigua. John SYMES was a Memeber of Council of
the Island of Antigua in 1678.
John and Elizabeth had a son, John SYMES of Montserrat and was in the Regiment of Lt.-Gen. Witham there. John d. 1709, killed in the Battle
at Port Mahon. He did not marry. His will leaves his Montserrat
plantaion to his nephew, Symes PARRY, son of his sister Elizabeth
SYMES and Smauel PARRY. He also refers to the children of his sister
Amy SYMES THOMPSON of Montserrat and the children of his sister
Katherine SYMES LOYD of Antigua. He also leaves and estate in England
to his nephew Symes PARRY and requiring him to take the surname of
SYMES to inherit.
Edward SYMES (baptised 1645) m. (possibly) Susanna Champion, widow of Bridgewater.
Rev. Charles SYMES (b. 1647), Rector and canon of Compton-Martyn,
married Ann Creed of Slaisbury in 1687.
Capt. George SYMES Jr. of Anitigua (b. 1672-d.1712) married Elizabeth Sherwood.
Henry SYMES (baptised 1653- d. 1714)Immegrated to Antigua with a grant
of 100 acres in 1682. He married Henrietta, sister of Gov. Yeamans,
and became Registrar of Antigua. He is buried at St. John's. He had
four children:
Capt. Henry SYMES
Richard SYMES (may have emmigrated to VA)
James SYMES
Elizabeth SYMES
William SYMES 9was living in 1675- possibly died brfor 1696) married
Mary. He had sons:
William SYMES
Thomas SYMES
Richard SYMES married Mary
AMY (Ann) SYMES
Elizabeth (b. 1682) married Smauel PARRY
I am very interested in following these families of Antugua and
Monserrat as descdants of Thomas SYMES of Barwick. If anyone has
