• Old Saxon Runes

From Joe Makowiec@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jul 14 17:17:11 2022
    Can anybody translate these Old Saxon runes? Transcribed as best I can;
unicode wouldn't make it through to the forum:

geofu is os næd : cen thorn berc dæg : sygil ti næd : ilcs rada ear

    https://makowiec.org/john-claiborne-davis-inscription.jpg

This was found on the grave of John Claiborne Davis, who was for a long
time the dean at an Anglican (ie high church) school in Washington, DC:

Apologies for this being entirely off topic, but I cannot
let this reference pass without comment: how nice it is
to see that Blinky The Shark is still remembered after all
    these years.

RIP, Blinky, who always had Usenet close to his heart.

The runes are on the findagrave.com page

Putting those into the translator gives
    gion : cþbd : stn : zrä

As they are just phonetics, is it possible "gion" sounds similar to
    "john"

I hadn't noticed this, but it makes sense.

If this is the same person, perhaps you might find something helpful
in Runes for Faring Forth - a new collection of poems. By Haviland
Ferris, pseud of John Claiborne Davis
    from Google Books https://tinyurl.com/22w6oov7

I think you're on to something. The book is available from a few sources,
but US$20-40 (£17-34) seems a bit steep on speculation.

Not at all. I miss Usenet every day. Web fora are, at best, a lame and
    crippled substitute.

    Why?

I use it every day. Usenet servers and clients are all available.

I had a quick look to see if any relevant newsgroups but possible one
was a Viking one but it is full of religious rubbish.

I thought I found something about RUNES on JISCMAIL but can't find again
so perhaps it was somewhere else!
