COSTALES is an unusual Spanish name that originated in the Asturias
Region of Northern Spain. Its roots come from the Valley of Peon , near
the town of Villaviciosa, just a short distance Northeast of the city of Gijon. An ancestral castle built in that place in the early 1500s still stands in the village of Candanal. The COSTALES family "tribe" of
noblemen achieved fame in Spanish history through its exploits in
keeping the Moors out of Asturias and deposing the Moorish king from his throne at the Battle of Granada in 1492. Today the COSTALES name can be
found in relatively small numbers in countries throughout the world to
which members of this Asturian famly emigrated through time.
We
are studying the migration of the COSTALES families from Spain to other countries and are building a master genealogy of family members. My own ancestors left Asturias for Cuba in the late 1700s. Part of this
COSTALES family left Cuba during the time of the War Between The States
and settled in New York City in 1863.
I
am interested in communicating with any and all COSTALES family members
and especially those with Cuban roots. (For the time being, please
respond in Englsh only.)
