I am inquiring as to the relation between Margaret Gernon, wife of Geoffrey Gresley, and the Langton family, whose arms are said to be on her seal. The arms on her seal are stated to be the families Gresley, Gernon & Langton by the Gresley Charter 256
and the Gresley Chartulary p. 42 (Collections for the History of Satffordshire Vol. 1, p. 47)
The Staffordshire Visitation, printed in Salt Soc. iii. 2. 86, 87 describes the wife of Geoffrey Gresley as " fille a John Gernon Sr de Laminton pres Oxenford " and and "filia Johannis Gernon militis Domini de Lanington juxta Oxoniam, " the arms of the
said Gernon family being, "Port gules 3 pales unde argent."
Could the reference to Lanington as stated in the Visitation of Staffordshire be be a variation of the name Langton as found in her seal and/or the lands belonging to that family. I have yet to locate the family Langton to ascertain the land held of that
family.
