    I am thinking that soc.history.what-if is still a functional usenet
    group. This is a test to make sure.

    Apparently Google have "deleted" it.

    Perhaps with the Microsoft morons unable to fill it with their idiot noise,
    the content and tone will improve.

    As pointed out in a.h.w-i, it _is._ But it's only accessible via actual
    Usenet servers and actual non-web clients, which means that it's more a
    niche thing now than it would have been in 1981 or 82.

    I'd suspect there are literally NO lurkers, which means not much of a
    base to get ideas from or bounce solutions off.

    There used to be a site called "DejaNews" which did for Usenet what
    the Wayback Machine does for the web today. Google bought it out and
    eventually has downgraded their support of it as they've found no way
    to monetize that which is chiefly what Google cares about. Not every
    Google acquisition has made them the sort of $$$ Youtube or Gmail has!

    Again - by the time Google removed SHWI from their list of supported
    groups a lot of Usenet users were accessing Usenet via Google so when
    they dropped SHWI as a supported group they cut off a lot of users.
    That most of the worst abusers were originating from Google owned IP
    addresses did not impress them in the least - they were happy to
    downgrade a newsgroup that had become a pain for them.

    There are LOTS of binary newsgroups that used to be strong that have
    been largely killed off by the trolls that by converting all titles to hexadecimal coded address have essentially turned the newsgroups
    affected into private torrent sites which is antithetical to what
    Usenet is supposed to be about but...

    I now access newsgroups by using the "Thunderbird"
    program and thru using the internet service provider
    "Newsguy".

    Depends what you mean by "lurkers", really. I doubt many people have ever
    read Usenet daily *via a website* without ever commenting. Needing to use
    a bookmark for each group seems to me like significantly more trouble
    than having a client program that downloads and presents the groups.

    I really doubt that people who access the net via mobile devices will
    ever use Usenet in significant numbers, and they're the majority now. But
    a group that connects a few dozen people around the world is just fine.
