Plague is believed to have been a contributing factor in
the fall of Egypt's brief Amarna Period. I know I've read
reports of traces of the plague found in the remains of
rodents from the period, in the city.

But then again, why wouldn't it be there?

Cases are still known today, in the west, even here in
the United States, even though we pretty much wiped
out the rats responsible for spreading it through Europe
at it's peak. It comes from nature, it exists in nature.
