I've got the signal path re-capped, so far. I removed one cap that was
sitting in between the center of the treble pot and one side of the
volume pot and jumpered it with a wire to get some additional gain on the
"normal" channel. Not sure what it was doing there other than killing
low end and some gain while there's already a bass trim pot. There were
already decoupler caps where they need to be on that channel.
Power caps are on the way while I decide what to do with the
"bass/instrument" channel. I might add a tone stack bypass switch on
that channel. People say it results in Fender Tweed sound.
Not going to bother adjusting any bias voltages until the new power caps
are in place.
The changes definitely increased gain, overall, but there is a lot of
gritty/phasey breakup as the input level falls. Especially noticeable at
low gain or when playing lightly. Almost sounds like a cruddy grungy
noise gate. Someone probably makes a $1000 boutique effects pedal to
emulate it. LOL
Another mod that I decided on adding is a switch to turn off the negative
feedback in the power amp section. This should result in even more
usable gain.
