    Some Usenet groups suspended in Goggle Groups
    Over the last few days, a number of Usenet groups have been banned. The two that I am aware of are comp.lang.lisp and comp.lang.forth, two programming languages groups in the Usenet comp hierarchy. This is the message I see;

    comp.lang.forth has been identified as containing spam, malware, or other malicious content.

    As with most of Usenet, the comp.* hierarchy is largely unmoderated. These two groups definitely are, so this is a Google action to ban them and not one of moderation, since there aren't any moderators. It's unclear how these groups have breached the
    rules.

    Of specific concern is the archive. These are some of the oldest groups on Usenet, and the depth & breadth of the historical material that has just disappeared from the internet, on two seminal programming languages, is huge and highly damaging. These
    are the history and collective memories of two communities that are being expunged, and it's not great, since there is no other comprehensive archive after Google's purchase of Dejanews around 20 years ago.

    Help. Please reinstate comp.lang.forth and comp.lang.lisp to Google Groups.

    I have asked to unban alt.suicide.holiday. I see other groups have had the same problem, and in cases been unbanned. This discussion is spot-on:

    USENET nowadays gets a lot of spam, and as a public group service is becoming almost useless. But Google acquired DejaNews, which had the only comprehensive archive of USENET groups. This archive is a vital part of the historic memory of the early
    Internet, along with services like web.archive.org. Google blocking certain groups is Very Bad. At least there should be an opt-in regime where you could state being 18 and then be allowed access. But really: whenever someone requests a group to be
    opened, it should be opened, as apparently happened with comp.lang.lisp and comp.lang.forth. You have to actively seek out and navigate to a group like alt.suicide.holiday, so you really don't need to reign them in so much. It is not like feeble-minded
    millennials are likely to stumble in and get all traumatized.

    Pointing to free-usenet and other USENET services is very irrelevant. Over the years I have checked multiple USENET services, free and paid, and no one has archives like DejaNews, err, Google Groups.

    As said before, I am personally mainly interested in a very specific thread for personal reasons. But as I have investigated this issue over 2020, I really think Google should just re-open old Usenet groups whenever requested. Google's conduct here is
    anathema to the spirit of the Internet, and to lock down historical material like this is akin to the British Museum putting ancient sculptures or artifacts locked down for no-one to see, because they might be offending to some.
