• On Positive Thinking

The problem with positive thinking is as follows. You think positive, you fail to anticipate problems, you do stupid things.

Positive thinking is something that you may want in a salesman. But don’t have an engineer thinking positive. An engineer who thinks positive will design equipment that will blow up on use.

With positive thinking, problems are not anticipated or dealt with, so they build.

Can positive thinking make you attractive or successful? Of course it can. It will not however make you right. There are all sorts of people who advance in all sorts of unscrupulous ways. If you get your popularity by denying problems, you are doing the
    wrong thing.

So we have people saying that negative thinking is at the root of all problems. This is transparently wrong. Negative thinking did not cause rainforest deforestation. Negative thinking did not cause the federal debt. Carelessness and short-sightedness
    caused these things.

Is negative thinking the solution? Not at all. Negative thinking can be badly wrong as well. While a positive thinker would deny the problem, the negative thinker would think that it is too much for us to solve. Both would be wrong.

Any number of baby boomers think that they have grown since the time that they had been hippies. What I see is not an improvement but a degradation. They started out caring about the world; they became short-sighted and careless. I want to see these
people regain their original ideals and impart them to the young people growing up today.

That these people have embraced wrong ideas, does not make them bad. They just need to see where the bad idea is a bad idea. Like Communism, positive thinking is a bad idea. And I highly recommend that people toss it out in favor of actual thinking.
