MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former teacher accused of sexual contact with
a Trezevant High School student exchanged more than 200 text
messages with the student and had told the principal that the
student was trying to blackmail her, according to documents
filed with the state.
Jasmine Edmond taught at Trezevant until her contract was not
renewed by Shelby County Schools last school year following an
investigation into the allegations. She then began teaching at
Power Center Academy, a charter school operated under the
umbrella of SCS.
According to emails and documents with the Tennessee State Board
of Education, Edmond was suspended in March 2018, and let go in
June 2018 for inappropriate physical contact with a student.
An email from Trezevant’s principal states the school was aware
of 239 texts, with the student threatening to expose the
relationship unless Edmond gave him money.
“… If You Lie Our Little Secret Going To Be Out There That’s Not
A Threat It’s A Promise …,” states one text message, allegedly
from the student to Edmond. “140 Tomorrow Or Your Career Over …”
But the records weren’t sent to the state until WREG began
asking questions last week, allowing Edmond to be hired at
another school in Memphis, Power Center Academy.
Edmond was indicted by a grand jury in November 2018. Memphis
Police charged her in January with sexual contact with a minor.
