Attorney John Eckrem of Medford, OR; ethical gnome
The state of Oregon provided John P. Eckrem with a law license in 1996.
The Oregon State Bar found John guilty of the following misconduct:
Failed to deposit client funds in proper trust account
Neglected legal matters entrusted to him
Failed to adequately communicate with clients
Failed to withdraw representation of clients when it was mandatory
Failed to timely refund unearned fees (cheater)
Acted knowingly in failing to inform trial court that he had been fired
Failed to provide required accounting of claimed fees to clients
Engaged in a pattern of misconduct
Misconduct involved multiple offenses
Failed to timely return client files to client after being discharged
In one matter, John was hired by Joseph and Michelle Simpson to
represent them in an adoption matter. The Simpsons orally agreed to pay
John a flat fee of $5,000 to complete the adoption matter.
Over a period of eight (8) months, John failed to purse the Simpsons’
legal matter as follows:
Failed to timely file petition for adoption and related materials with
the court
Failed to send materials to the Dept of Human Services (DHS) within 30
days after the materials were filed with the court as required
Failed to forward to DHS some of the materials his assistant had sent to him Failed to contact DHS about the status of the Simpson matter
Failed to cont act DHS when he learned that DHS had not received any
documents regarding the adoption matter
Due to John’s gross negligence, the Simpsons fired him and demanded a
refund for all unearned fees, which John refused to promptly do as he
was required.
As a consequence of his misconduct, the apologists for Attorney Misfits
sitting on the Oregon Supreme Court punished John by gifting him with a complimentary 60 day suspension of his law license.
As we speak (ca. November 2012) John practices law with the Law Offices
of John Eckrem LLC in Medford, Oregon.

MEDFORD, Ore. -- A Medford attorney is being investigated by the Oregon
State Bar. John Eckrem has been practicing law since 1996, but since
then, his license has been suspended six times--including now.
Some victims said Eckrem robbed them. He took their money and failed to adequately represent them in court.
Eckrem's website said he specialized in DUIIs, criminal law, family law, divorce, custody and more. Victims said the last thing he specializes in
is law.
"Everything seemed fine at first but then I started noticing a lot of
his unprofessional behavior -- not responding to phone calls, emails,
not showing up at court appointments," victim Masao Williams said.
Masao is not the first victim to come forward. The Oregon State Bar said Eckrem's license to practice law has been suspended three times for
ethical violations, which includes not adequately representing clients.
His license was suspended twice for administrative reasons. The State
Bar said currently, his license is suspended based on two separate
matters: he failed to comply with probation and he failed to cooperate
with several Oregon State Bar ethics investigations.
Another victim, Diane Davila, said she hired Eckrem to get her children
back in her custody. Instead, she is out $2,100 and has not seen her
children in almost a year.
"He did rob from me," Davila said. "And he robbed from my kids too."
Eckrem does confirm that he is being investigated, but says that he was
not paid the full amount for his services by the two victims interviewed.
The Oregon State Bar wants to remind everyone--John Eckrem does not have
a license to practice law. If there are current clients with concerns,
please call the Client Assistance Office with the State Bar at (503)
620-0222.
Anyone with complaints, can file with the Oregon State Bar. Complaint
forms and background information can be found here:
http://www.osbar.org/public/legalinfo/1174.html
Lastly, the Oregon State Bar says it "maintains a fund to reimburse
clients who lose money or property as a result of dishonest conduct by
their lawyer. The fund is supported by the lawyers of Oregon. The claims
must meet some specific requirements, and are discretionary based on
careful review of each matter." Clients who feel they may have a claim
can find more information here:
