A jealous thug and his cousin stabbed and set a man on fire with
petrol that left him with horrific burns after accusing him of
    “trying to sh*g my bird”.

Stanley McBrien and Edward Crompton left Joseph Holding with 50%
burns after an attack in the hallway of his home in Willoughby
    Road, Waterloo, Liverpool.

Mr Holding tried to put the flames out in a bathroom shower
before jumping out of a window after realising his house had
been set alight in the assault.

The prosecution said that the vicious attack was because Mr
Holding had made a “pass” made at McBrien’s partner Taylor Brown.

Crompton, 25, of Bowland Drive, Litherland, and McBrien, 24, of
Wembley Road, Crosby, were both convicted of attempted murder
    and jailed for life.

Liverpool Crown Court heard detectives moved quickly to
interview the victim fearing he would die after the attack on
    November 9 last year.

Simon Christie, prosecuting, said that Mr Holding was able to
push his attackers back out of his front door after being
    “slashed and doused” with petrol.

He added that the victim “thought he was safe but then they lit
the petrol from outside and he caught fire”.

One neighbour saw the communal building ablaze and Mr Holding
falling out of the bathroom window, on to rabbit hutches in the
    garden below.

Paramedics found he had suffered multiple cuts to his head and
left arm, plus extensive burns to his head, chest, abdomen and
    limbs.

On the way to Aintree Hospital, the victim asked for a pen and
paper and wrote down the names of McBrien, Crompton and Taylor
    Brown.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the
critical care unit at Whiston Hospital, where he was sedated.

On November 11, Mr Holding was briefly brought out of sedation
and spoke to detectives about what happened.

The victim said the attack came after he had some drinks with
Taylor Brown and another woman at the Lion and Unicorn pub in
    Waterloo the Wednesday beforehand.

They went to buy a pizza and beer before going back to a flat,
but at some point, Ms Brown accused him of making advances
    towards her.

The court heard he denied this and he called her a taxi from his
phone, which was the last he saw of her before the attack.

Mr Holding claimed McBrien said to him during the attack "this
is for trying to s**g my bird" and he was set alight as he
shoved them out of the door.

He said he ran upstairs to a bathroom and tried to put the
flames out in the shower, but realising how bad the fire was, he
was forced to jump out of the window.

He said he and McBrien had known each other since they were kids
and had been friends for about six years.

Judge Brian Cummings, QC, said he had to consider the sentence
for murder, "which it very nearly was", and that it would have
had a starting point of 30 years.

He said: "You intended to burn your victim alive - a form of
death well recognised as involving terrible suffering."

The judge said the planned attack and fire risked the lives of
neighbours, adding: "Your actions showed a callous disregard for
    his safety."

Judge Cummings continued: "This is a very grave crime - a
savage, cowardly, murderous attack on a lone victim, who was
    unarmed and unsuspecting.

"Had you achieved what you set out to, A, your victim would have
died, B, your guilt would have gone undetected and C, his family
would have been left suffering for the rest of their lives the
    resultant grief and injustice."

He jailed "ringleader" McBrien for life with a minimum of 12
years and 273 days, and Crompton for life with a minimum of 15
years and five days, taking into account time spent in custody.
