ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis woman shot her longtime friend Saturday evening in Midtown while the two were passengers in a car, police said.

Bessie Thomas shot the 36-year-old woman once in the head shortly before 5
p.m. in the 3900 block of Chouteau Avenue, according to a probable cause statement filed by St. Louis police.

After the shooting, the car’s driver pulled into a nearby QuikTrip gas
station at the intersection of South Vandeventer and Chouteau avenues.

Police taped off a large section of the gas station’s parking lot and
could be seen focusing their attention on a white Ford sedan.

Authorities said prior to the shooting, Thomas and her longtime friend
began screaming at each other before their disagreement turned physical.
Thomas was sitting in the car’s front passenger seat; her friend was
sitting in the car’s back seat.

By 6 p.m., police said the woman had died of her injuries.

Prosecutors charged Thomas, 46, with one felony count each of first-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The victim did not have a gun or any other weapon, according to charging documents.

Police have not identified the victim or the woman driving the car, other
than to say she was a friend to both of the other woman.

In a statement Saturday night, a QuikTrip spokeswoman said the company’s
top priority is the safety of its employees and customers.

“We will continue to take necessary and appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees, customers and communities we
    serve,” the spokeswoman said.

Thomas was being held without bond at the St. Louis City Justice Center.
Court records did not list an attorney for her.

In 2002, Thomas pleaded guilty to one felony count of possessing a
controlled substance and in 2007 to two felony counts of child abuse.

Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call
    CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477).
