    A 26-year-old Baton Rouge man was sentenced to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty Monday to rape and kidnapping charges in a violent 2015 home invasion on Tams Drive.

    Willie Joseph McCormick, who was shot and wounded during the incident, was one of three masked intruders who kicked in the door to an apartment on May 1, 2015, and held a woman and man captive in a bathroom, police have said. The woman was 28 at the time;
    the male victim was 30.

    One of the intruders beat the man in the head with a handgun, police said, and another intruder raped the woman. The first time the intruder hit the man in the head with the gun, it fired, but no one was hit.

    The woman spoke directly to McCormick in the courtroom moments before he was sentenced, saying in a victim impact statement that he took something from her that she will never get back.

    “Ever since that night it’s been so hard to deal with anything,” she said. “I don’t want you to have control over me anymore. I’m taking back control of my own life.”

    A warrant for McCormick’s arrest indicated the woman was forced to perform oral sex in the living room while her attacker tapped her on her head with a handgun. She was then raped by the same person in a bedroom.

    DNA linked McCormick to the crime scene, prosecutor Louise Hines said in court.

    McCormick was shot in the arm by another man who was staying in a second bedroom and heard the break-in. Police found McCormick at a Baton Rouge hospital, where he was being treated for his wound.

    McCormick initially told investigators he was shot during a robbery at a Coursey Boulevard convenience store, then said someone shot him during a drug deal on Eddie Robinson Drive and South Boulevard.

    McCormick was scheduled to stand trial Monday on one count each of aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping and two counts of armed robbery, but instead pleaded guilty to one count each of forcible rape and second-degree kidnapping.

    State District Judge Beau Higginbotham sentenced McCormick to 40 years on each count, with the terms to run concurrently.

    The other intruders were never arrested. McCormick did not name them.
