RENTON, Wash. — - The operator of a Renton business posing as a
massage parlor and spa was busted Wednesday for prostitution
after a victim managed to escape and call police, authorities
said.
Police arrested a 39-year old woman on suspicion of attempted
promoted prostitution and unlawful imprisonment. Investigators
say the victim was being held against her will and sexually
exploited.
Investigators did not say if they believe there are any more
victims, but they’re asking anyone with any information to
contact them.
“I heard a flash bang and the building shook,” said Dave, who
didn’t want to give his last name but works nearby.
Renton Police Department officers and members of the SWAT unit
surrounded Q Spa on NE 4th Street around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday.
“We could hear the SWAT team up the road yelling, ‘Come out with
your hands up’ with the megaphone, and then a flash bang went
off, shook the windows,” Kevin Thompson, who works nearby, said.
People next door shared photos with KOMO News as the law
enforcement officers stormed into the business.
“There were two SWAT vehicles and probably 25 to 30 police
officers surrounding with shields and guns,” said Edward Tasca,
who also works nearby. “They broke in, had to break down the
door.”
Renton police said a woman showed up to work at what she thought
was a legitimate job, but was expected to perform sexual
services for clients.
“A lot of people around town kind of figured what was going on
there,” Thompson said.
Businesses nearby say they noticed suspicious activity with
people coming and going late at night and living in trailers
behind the business, but it wasn’t until the victim was able to
break free and call 911 that police were able to come in and
make an arrest.
“That’s crazy, I would never suspect something like that around
here,” Tasca said, “These days, doesn’t surprise me.”
It’s unclear if the business will be shut down, but police say
they will refer the case to the city attorney and the business
licensing office.
