The nucleolus is an organelle where most of the ribosomal RNA is
produced inside the eukaryotic nucleus. Long after the Cambrian
explosion terrestrial vertebrates evolved a novel structure in the
nucleolus. Amniotes have a third compartment added to the nucleolus.
These researchers found that one gene seems to be responsible for the
    creation of this third compartment.

What is interesting is that if they put the TCOF1 gene into fish they
can develop an additional compartment in their nucleolus and go from 2 compartments to 3. It looks like the addition of this gene was able to
utilize what already existed to form the third compartment that amniotes evolved. Single gene evolution resulting in the production of a novel
    complex structure.

Interesting article (what I understood of it); thanks.
Sounds like they're still working out the details, including
the utility of the third section.
