On one of the Planet Earth episodes David Attenborough made the claim
that some springs none of the penguin chicks survived the trek to the
sea from the nesting grounds. The peril was the breaking up of the ice
sheets, and if their paths were blocked or fissures opened up too far
from the sea the juveniles could fall in and drown. Apparently that
    happened this year.

Global warming is being blamed, but more ice melted the last warm
interval, so what they should be doing is trying to figure out where
these penguins can nest and survive this warm period. They obviously
made it through worse conditions last time. More ice melted and sea
levels were 20 meters higher than they are now, and at least some of
each species made it through that episode.
