    Flint is sharper than steel, obsidian is sharper than flint.

    A spear is a lever. The long (heavy) wooden shaft is a
    lever. You throw it down from above, as straight down
    as you can, and of course it's going to fall off to the
    side... that lever action working a huge swath inside
    the bear. If it's banging against trees, brush or low
    lying branches, it's even worse...

    Look at the way Neanderthals were built! There's
    more than a superficial resemblance to Chimps. Yes,
    they were the good Doctor's "Aquaboreal." They were
    excellent climbers who perfected ambush hunting.

    This is why balanced throwing spears vanish from
    the archaeological record for 200,000 to 300,000
    years: They found something better!

    He has a camera, a GoPro or similar, attached to the
    spear shaft. Might've been nice if the bear didn't catch
    on & bite the spear shaft in half!

    (We could perfectly time how long until it died, if it hadn't
    done that)

    But as you can see it is a very effective means for
    acquiring meat and/or ridding yourself of a dangerous
    threat.

    Something like a deer you can hunt safely from the
    ground. I've seen a video of a man hidden in shrubs
    only to spring forward with his spear, stabbing a deer.
    But you probably never want to try that with a bear
    or even a boar.

    Boars were notoriously aggressive, attacking hunters
    to the point of running up a spear or sword shaft to
    attack hunters! Instead, leave some bait on the ground,
    climb a tree & wait...

    Set up on a limb above a game trail..
