    . . .

    Ummmmmmm ... doesn't EVERY Puritan-UnApproved substance
either "shrink the brain" and/or cause "chromosome
    damage" ??? :-)

Well, hashish use in 'arab' countries has been going
on for thousands of years - yet most of our sciences
and math methods COME from that area - Euros hadn't
a clue, we had to steal the stuff from the Moslems.

Now I'm not going to suggest daily hashish use with
the illusion that it will improve the species ...
seems to make many kinda dull actually ... but even
more stupid are 'news' sources repeating these
endless 'shrinks the brain' warnings from the late
    50s on.

Caffeine strips the insulation from the nerves
and causes chromosomal damage. Puritan approved.
Alcohol kills brain cells and given time liver cells
while it remains as addictive as other narcotic drugs.
But the real Puritans preferred to drink as the water
of the colony was dangerous. Puritan approved for
    hundreds of years.

So what if it shrinks the brain. Smaller brains
are more efficient. Unless someone is in a lot of pain
daily cannabis use is pointless. If someone is taking
cannabis frequently they do not have to worry about
interfering with the respiratory reflex as alcohol
and the opiates do. Medical alcoholic solutions of
cannabis were on the Formulary before 1937 when
Harry J.Anslinger decided to stick his spoke in
the wheel of medicine in the hope of increasing his
bureaucracy at the pre-DEA, Federal Bureau of Narcotics.

Oh by the way torture also shrinks the brain
apparently of the tortured and the torturer who thinks
that torture gets truth out of the tortured. This
justification for sadism extends up the hierarchy to
the approver of such stupid behavior. Maybe the result
of tortuous up-bringings by controlling parents?

The usual 'Puritan' position is that if it's in
any way FUN then it's "sin" and DANGEROUS. Good
little Puritans are ONLY allowed to get a thrill
from worship of the approved god.

Oh, as for the beer -vs- water thing ... THAT was
a literal survival tactic. Water was often lethal
    before large-scale sanitation systems. Gotta
make a FEW practical allowances .......

I'm not gonna argue the plus/minus aspects of
reefer -vs- everything else. Such 'studies' are
way too often corrupted by ideology and/or biased
stat techniques. Let's just say that a little of
whatever probably ain't THAT bad and be done
    with it.

Ok, today, that 'little' has a higher and higher
chance of being full of fentanyl or worse ...
    just bear it in mind.

My main complaint is the MSM so happily jumping
on to ANY "science" that makes unapproved dope
look extra bad. This kinda started with "Reefer
Madness" and got worse from there.

The idea that Hispanics/Mexicans and Negroes might

enough for the Southern Democrats to whom Harry Anslinger

Anslinger was trying to keep his Federal Bureau

besides , who wants a fat brain

Fat is insulation for the neurons.
If we were better designed it would be cushioning the
whole internal structure of the brain to provide resistance

Ok ... he didn't mean "fat" in THAT way :-)

However neural-tree trimming is a big, important,
part of development. It starts even before birth
and there's a LOT of it in the first few years.
If you kept all the neural connections you had
at birth you'd be a drooling moron.

    Start here :
    https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7368197/

Such "trimming/pruning" even applies to artificial
    neural networks.

So, 'cortex thinning' isn't ALWAYS a bad thing,
can sometimes be seen as 'eliminating useless
    or dysfunctional connections'.

Large amounts of alcohol lead to cortex thinning,
yet many of our best authors/actors were major
    alcoholics and worse.

Hunter S. Thompson was maybe the extreme outside
    case :-)

(Bi-Polar syndrome doesn't shrink brains, but also
seems connected to 'artistic creativity'. "Cure"
it and you deprive the world in one view of things)
