WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — A 19-year-old was arrested after five people
were shot Tuesday at the Brass Mill Center mall in Waterbury, according
to police.
Tajuan Washington, 19, of Waterbury, was charged with five counts of first-degree assault, risk of injury to a child, criminal use of a
weapon, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless
endangerment, carrying a pistol without a permit and illegal possession
of weapons in a motor vehicle.
He was arraigned Wednesday and held on a $2 million bond.
At the time of the shooting, Washington had been out on a $25,000 bond
for multiple motor vehicle-related charges.
All of the victims were being treated at hospitals. Waterbury police
said Tuesday night the victims had non-life-threatening injuries.
During a press conference Wednesday, Mayor Paul Pernerewski said that
three of the patients had been released from the hospital. The remaining
two are in stable condition.
He said the worst injury was to a “young lady” who suffered a gunshot to the spine, but time will tell if she was paralyzed.
Gov. Ned Lamont, Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski Jr., and police held a
press conference at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday outside the Brass Mill Center
mall.
“We do not believe this was a random act of violence,” Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said. “We believe this started as a conflict and escalated. We do know that there was one gunman at this time that we identified; that gunman was armed with a semi-automatic pistol.”
News 8 spoke with a mother leaving the mall with her infant and a
2-year-old in a stroller, while the father was relieved to see them
being escorted out by police.
It was a very tense time as police had to clear the mall and make sure
the suspect wasn’t still hiding inside, as people ran for their lives
from bullets. Shots reverberated through the center court of the Brass
Mill Center mall just before 5 p.m. Police arrived on the scene very
quickly, escorting paramedics inside to treat the wounded, as some ran
for their lives, others sheltered in place.
3 of 5 Brass Mill Center mall shooting victims released from hospital,
mayor says “It was really amazing to watch people keep cool heads and
follow plans, and shelter in place,” Spagnolo said. “We have been able
to escort them out. Detectives are interviewing those folks right now
and identifying them.”
It took more than four hours to clear the mall, which included a large
area, two floors, numerous back storage rooms, and passageways. Tactical
teams were brought in from all over the area to help with the search for
a suspect and anyone else still sheltering in place.
The mall remains closed on Wednesday.
The FBI and the ATF are assisting the Waterbury Police Department with
the investigation. Gov. Ned Lamont (D-Conn.) said state police will also
be helping with the investigation.
“Our hearts break for the Waterbury community, the victims, and their families who have been impacted by this incident,” the governor said in
a statement.
