Austin Blaine Vann (Montgomery County Police)
ROCKVILLE, Md. (ABC7) — A 29-year-old North Bethesda man police believe
used social media to target victims has been charged with additional
sexual assault offenses.
In October 2017, a woman reported that Austin Blaine Vann had lured her
to an empty apartment under false pretenses and attempted to rape her, according to a release from Montgomery County Police.
The woman told police she met Vann at a party in July 2017 and left some personal items in his car. When she contacted him in October 2017 to get
her property back, Vann met her at her home but said she would have to
come back to his apartment in the 11500 block of Old Georgetown Road,
police say.
The woman said she waited outside the door to the apartment while Vann
went inside to get her things. She said he then pulled her inside and
attempted to rape her.
When the woman reported the assault to police, Vann fled the state and
was arrested in California in March 2018, police say.
After he was extradited back to Maryland, Vann was charged with multiple
sexual assault offenses. He was then released on bond, awaiting trial.
In January 2019, a woman met a man called “Austin” on social media.
After exchanging text messages with him, she met him at a restaurant in
North Bethesda. Drinking with him at the bar, she said she left her
drinks behind when she went to the restroom several times.
The woman said she had no memory of leaving the bar, but later became
aware that Austin was having sexual intercourse with her without her
consent in a bathroom in an apartment building.
She told police she didn’t know where she was. She was found in the area
of the 11500 block of Old Georgetown Road.
Investigators identified Austin Blaine Vann, who was awaiting trial in
the 2017 assault, as the man who called himself “Austin.”
Police arrested Vann on March 25 and charged him with second degree
rape. He is being held at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
Investigators are concerned there may be additional victims related to encounters with Austin Blaine Vann due to his use of social media
platforms to engage victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact
the Special Victims Investigations Division at 240-773-5400.
