    Samuel Patterson

UPDATE 2/21/2025: Patterson was found guilty on two counts of rape (Level 1 Felony) and burglary to a residence where serious bodily injury occurs (Level 1 Felony).

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 13 at 1:30 p.m.

Both victims lived in retirement communities, police said, with one residing in Lawrence and another in McCordsville. Forensic evidence linked the attacks, police said.

Samuel Patterson, 56, has been in the Marion County Jail after being charged in connection with the rape of a 77-year-old woman in Lawrence on Sept. 26, 2018. The McCordsville assault was June 27, 2018, according to court documents.

A coordinated effort by police in Lawrence and McCordsville helped investigators connect the attacks.

According to court documents, the June 27 rape in McCordsville happened in the Traditions at Brookside assisted living community. The 91-year-old victim told police she heard a strange sound at night; before she realized what was happening, someone put a
pillowcase over her head and asked her where she kept her money.

The woman tried to reach for her medical alert necklace, but the man told her to stop and threatened to kill her. He then proceeded to rape her, she told police.

In the September 2018 Lawrence assault, a woman reported seeing a man later identified as Patterson crawl through her kitchen window at Westminster Village North. He demanded cash, took her cell phone and raped her, investigators said.

Due to similarities of the attacks, investigators in Lawrence and McCordsville believed the same suspect may have been responsible. The investigation came together when McCordsville officials ran a license plate check on a vehicle that was parked less
than 200 feet from the site of the June 27 attack.

The plate traced back to Patterson, who was registered as a sexually violent predator in Marion County. Patterson was convicted in 1998 of raping a 79-year-old woman in LaPorte County. He took cash and jewelry during that case. He was released in
    February 2017.

Patterson had used his cell phone near a McCordsville cell tower on the day before the attack, police said. He also fit the description of the attacker in the Lawrence and McCordsville attacks.

Evidence from a sexual assault kit in the Lawrence case confirmed Patterson as the suspect in that case. He was taken to the Marion County Jail on charges of rape, burglary, criminal confinement and kidnapping.

DNA tests of hairs found during the McCordsville investigation linked Patterson to that attack as well. He remains in the Marion County Jail.
