URBANA — A Champaign man who pleaded guilty to sexually molesting a child has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Toti Tatu-Commis, 39, who listed an address in the 400 block of East Bradley Avenue, will have to serve at least 10 years behind bars and then faces deportation to his home country of Congo.

With the aid of a French translator, Tatu-Commis pleaded guilty Friday before Judge Tom Difanis to a single count of criminal sexual assault, admitting that in August, he had sexual contact with an adolescent girl at a home in Champaign.

The activity came to the attention of Champaign police when the child told a school official in late August.

In return for his guilty plea, other more serious charges of predatory criminal sexual assault alleging an ongoing course of abuse were dismissed.

He was given credit for 76 days already served.

Assistant State’s Attorney Bridget Schott said Tatu-Commis had no known prior convictions.
