PORTLAND, Ore. - A former Multnomah County corrections deputy faces
multiple charges after she allegedly smuggled drugs into jail for a man
with whom she became romantically involved, the Multnomah County
    Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

A criminal investigation into Devona Susanne Preble didn't begin until
January 2024, MCSO said, which was after she'd already been fired from
the agency. Detectives became suspicious when she was found in the
company of a man wanted in an unrelated criminal case.

In May 2023, Portland police officers responded to a domestic
disturbance at Preble's home. MCSO said they learned from police that
Preble had tried to hide the man's identity - and only after they
identified him did she reveal that she was a corrections deputy with
    MCSO.

At the time, Preble was in her first 12 months of work with the agency,
so she was terminated as a probationary employee.

Using recorded jail phone calls involving the man and Preble, MCSO
detectives found evidence that they'd begun a relationship in early
2023, while he was incarcerated at the Multnomah County Detention Center
    and Preble was still employed.

Further investigation, according to MCSO, also revealed that Preble had smuggled drugs into the jail for her boyfriend. A statement from the
agency did not elaborate on the nature of that evidence.

On Tuesday, MCSO deputies and Portland's Special Emergency Reaction Team
(SERT) arrested Preble. She was booked into jail on one count of
supplying contraband, one count of conspiracy to supply contraband, one
count hindering prosecution, three counts first-degree official
misconduct and three counts second-degree official misconduct.

"Our deputies take an oath to uphold the law and maintain the highest
ethical standards," said Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey
O'Donnell. "The actions of this former employee violated that oath and compromised the integrity of our agency. This case underscores our
commitment to accountability and public trust."

Preble is scheduled for arraignment on Friday. Records show she's
already been released from jail on her own recognizance.

Her co-defendant in the case, identified in court documents as
33-year-old Markus Aaron Jimenez, is charged with one count of supplying contraband, one count of conspiracy to supply contraband.
