MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A man was arrested after a woman said he tried to rape
her at the Memphis Public Library.
It happened Monday, July 1 at the library on South Front Street,
according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD). The woman told police
that 35-year-old Kevin Standberry followed her into the women's
bathroom, grabbed her, started kissing her and touched her breasts.
She was able to break free and get to another part of the library but
had to go back to the bathroom to get her belongings, according to MPD.
The woman told police that Standberry was still in the bathroom, waiting
for her, and that he pulled down his pants when she reentered before
trying to force her into a sexual act.
MPD said that the woman was able to escape and run out of the bathroom.
A security officer saw Standberry walking out of the women's bathroom, according to police. That security officer detained the 35-year-old and
called MPD.
Standberry was arrested and charged with sexual battery and attempted
rape.
