Deniro Smith (Source: TBI)
MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A former counselor at Youth Villages Bartlett
pleaded guilty to raping a teen who was receiving treatment at the
facility, according to the District Attorney's Office.
Deniro Smith, 29, will spend three years in prison for raping a
17-year-old.
Smith was scheduled to receive less than a year in prison thanks to a
plea bargain, but the victim's mother put her foot down. She contacted
local media and confronted Smith in the courtroom.
Her actions forced the attorneys involved to come up with another
deal--one that gave Smith more time behind bars.
Smith pleaded guilty to statutory rape. Investigators said he raped the
child several times on the grounds at Youth Villages and at Smith's
off-campus apartment.
As part of the plea deal, Smith will be placed on the Tennessee Sex
Offender Registry for 10 years after serving his three year prison
sentence.
Youth Villages is a facility that treats emotionally and behaviorally
troubled children.
