MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Deputies escorted an assistant middle school principal
out of a Mid-South school Tuesday, and charged him with aggravated rape, according to court documents.
“No, this is my first time hearing about it. No one has told me anything about it,” said Charles Sturkey, a parent.
Court records identify the person arrested as Marcus Latrell Matthews,
44, of Memphis. An indictment obtained by FOX13 shows that the rape
Matthew's is charged with happened in May 2024.
“Memphis-Shelby County Schools is aware that Shelby County Sheriff's
Office deputies visited White Station Middle School on Monday to meet
with a school staff member who was escorted from the building and later
placed under arrest. The Sheriff's Department has not released details
of the charges leading to the arrest, but this incident does not appear
to be related to immigration enforcement. The District has placed the
staff member on investigative leave until more information becomes
available. The safety of students and staff remains our top priority,”
said MSCS in a statement to FOX13 News.
Details of what led to the charges were not immediately known, but FOX13 learned from court records a Grand Jury indicted Dr. Matthews last
Thursday. The records indicate the alleged incident may have happened in
May 2024.
"I did not, but my granddaughter goes here but my daughter would have
mentioned it to me. I would have known. That would have been the first
thing she said. She has no idea. As a matter of fact, when I go get in
line to pick them up, I’m about to tell her now,” said White Station grandparent Marvin Pender when asked if they had received any notice of
the situation.
According to Dr. Matthews’ LinkedIn page, he has worked at several
Mid-South schools and districts, including Hamilton High School,
Craigmont Middle School, Cordova High School, Frayser Community Schools
and Youth Villages. It shows Dr. Matthews attended Christian Brothers University and earned a Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate from the
University of Memphis.
In a LinkedIn post a year ago, Dr. Matthews thanked several people for suggesting he submit his name to be considered for MSCS Superintendent,
but he said he decided not to do so.
Dr. Matthews is being held in jail on a $100,000 bond.
