CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Ohio Highway State Patrol troopers are coming to
Cincinnati to help police as videos of a large, violent street brawl
Downtown last weekend continue to draw global attention and residents
raise safety concerns.
State troopers and the patrol’s Aviation Unit will provide support to
police, Gov. Mike DeWine tells FOX19 NOW.
Local authorities have requested support amid “recent instances of violence,” his office said in a news release Wednesday night.
Troopers will focus on traffic enforcement to free up police to respond
to and investigate other crimes.
The Highway Patrol’s Aviation Unit will assist police in crime reduction initiatives, criminal suspect searches, and vehicle pursuit mitigation.
“Ohio essentially has a package of law enforcement support services the
state can provide in times when local authorities could use some
additional help,” Gov. DeWine said in the release. “We’ve done this in other cities, and it has made a big difference.”
“I want to express my deep appreciation to Governor DeWine for his
continued leadership and his assistance on our most important
responsibility as a government,” Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said in
the governor’s news release.
”Combatting violence is our most urgent challenge, and this coordination
and support from the State of Ohio will assist our local law enforcement
in ensuring the safety of all our residents. I am extremely proud of our
police officers for their diligence and exceptional service – and we
will continue to be unrelenting in our support of their work.”
Police Chief Teresa Theetge is quoted in the news release saying:
“Our partnership with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the use of their Aviation Unit have been instrumental in recent CPD initiatives. I am
extremely grateful to Governor DeWine for offering state resources for
the safety of our communities.”
Other cities that have used state-supported violence reduction
initiatives include:
Cleveland
Columbus
Dayton
Youngstown
Toledo
“These initiatives led to felony arrests, the confiscation of illegally possessed firearms, the recovery of stolen vehicles, and the seizure of
illegal drugs,” the release from the governor’s office states.
Additional resources have also been offered to the city through the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and the Ohio Department of
Youth Services.
Those agencies can help locate parole and/or post-prison release
conditions.
