• AMD Ryzen bundled cooler?

From David@21:1/5 to All on Mon May 19 12:58:52 2025
    My order from OverClockers 16/09/2016

AMD Piledriver FX-6 Six Core 6300 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+)
    Processor

I am trying to identify the CPU cooler, and in the order there is no
mention of a separate cooler as an item.
However AMD don't list the 6300 as a processor which comes with a bundled
    CPU cooler.
    <https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/ecosystem/cpu-cooler- solutions.html#bundled>

I am due to take it apart and renew the thermal paste, but am considering ordering a more powerful CPU cooler.
If only I knew which one I had and what the specification was.
It would make sense to upgrade the cooler in one operation.

Then again, if the thermal paste refresh improves the cooling markedly, I
may not need a new cooler.

    Cheers

Can you share a picture of it? Most aftermarket coolers will have a
    brand name somewhere.

No chance of digging out the order details from your emails?

I posted the order details from the invoice in my email.
No mention of a cooler, so I am assuming it was bundled with the CPU.

I am trying to decide if I should order a larger cooler before taking the system apart to get at the CPU cooling fan.
However without knowing the specification of the original fan I can't
    estimate what "larger" is.

    Cheers

I'm not up to speed with AMD's socket designs in 2025 but I suspect trying
to find an AM3+ compatible cooler might be a challenge.

A lot of coolers come with a bundle of attachment plates, which can cover
quite a few years back (when they change the socket they less commonly
change the heatsink mounts). I suspect finding something for AM3+ won't too hard.

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/products/cpu-cooler/#c=4&sort=price&page=1&X=210,63574
finds 317 models at UK retailers. The Cooler Master Hyper series has always been my go-to, although I haven't bought one for a few years.

I have searched but cannot find any obvious technical information,
    certainly not from AMD.

At least I know that it is an AMD part and was presumably bundled with the
    CPU.

Taken it off, and it looked OK(ish).
Couldn't quite see into the centre beneath the fan, so took the fan off
    the heat sink.
    Oh, my!
There was a load of grot in there, no doubt clogging up the airflow.

Cleaned it all up, cleaned the mating area between the heat sink and CPU,
did a few trial fits then put some new thermal paste on and refitted the
    fan.

I had previously set the fan speed to Full Speed, using the Gigabyte application.
I have now wound it back to Quiet, and the temperatures seem OK so far.

I will start Speedfan to log temperatures and see how we go.
I have Standard, Performance, and Full Speed options if I need more fan.

Hopefully I don't need a new CPU cooler.

Perhaps a reminder to me that CPU cooling could do with a regular service.

The system was built in 2016 and I don't recall if I have cleaned it
    before.

    Cheers

Yes, this thread has somebody with that fan and an FX-6300: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/problems-adding-a-cooler-to-am3-motherboard.3836228/
    and another:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285072232856

Since AMD don't sell coolers separately it appears to be the bundled cooler.

It's a fairly unremarkable block of extruded aluminium with a fan on top -
not as if it's a fancy heatpipe design like anything you'd buy aftermarket.

    According to:
    https://www.techpowerup.com/cpu-specs/fx-6300.c1210
CPU has a 95W TDP, so all you need is an AM3+ cooler capable of 95W, that
    will fit in your case.

    Ta.

I'm starting to think that PCs should have an annual service like other mechanical things, such as cars.

Jury is out on Combi Boilers because ours hasn't been serviced since installation in 2012.
