• New build: transferring programs and data

From Frank@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jun 18 21:27:03 2025
I've got a new build to set up and need to transfer as many programs as possible to it from my current desktop, hopefully without having to go
    through fresh installs.

Are there any apps that might automate the process?

You haven't said which OSes are on these machines.

    Oops: Windows 11 Pro

If they are both W11 Pro, I'd clone the disc from the first machine to
the second one. Windows may well work everything out, like new drivers
etc. I think it's worth a try if you are after a quick fix.

A clean windows install, plus clean install of all apps, is more
reliable. But it takes much longer.

A thought: if I clone the existing OS M.2 SSD, and install on the M.2
SSD in the new build, would Windows sort out any changes such as drivers
that the new motherboard would need?

Would program licences be carried over?

That's what I already suggested. There's no guarantee, but windows is
pretty good at spotting new hardware and downloading drivers.

Would program licences be carried over?

You'd be copying over the disc data, including the registry data. So, I
expect that would include the licences.

Sorry, I could just have answered 'yes' to both your questions. I'm just
    being a bit cautious.

Ah, sorry, I missed that. Eternal September seems a little hit and miss
    at the moment.
