• Where are my passwords?

From captain.black@gmail.com@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jan 5 17:13:47 2023
Just reset two 11” MBAs. Both signed in to iCloud - one on Catalina, one on High Sierra. Only one is auto-filling Safari passwords though (Catalina).
The other says I have no passwords saved in Safari. Why?

The p/w are saved locally aren't they? Or is Safari supposed to sync its p/w >> across all your devices?

Well, I thought they should be sync’d. The Catalina MBA happily logged into a number of sites after doing a fresh install then logging into iCloud.

Well I don't know one way or the other as I don't use iCloud.

Possibly because "Passwords & keychain" synching with iCloud is an
option. You might have had it enabled on one and not on the other.

Have you checked your icloud settings on HS to see if it includes passwords?

Though you might possibly be hitting something that can't sync between
two different OS versions, or just couldn't sync on HS.

HS and Cat just have the option to turn on Keychain syncing. I don’t see/think there should be a ‘share password’ option. Safari on HS has been populated with my Bookmarks… Can’t find any info (yet) about possible issues with different OS versions.

Found a few people with slightly different syncing issues. Solution always seems to be some version of ‘turn it (iCloud) off and on again’ on all devices.

Keychain is, and it’s turned on. My Bookmarks have made it across, just not the passwords.

It is important to keep track of your passwords and store them in a secure location. Some options for storing passwords include using a password manager, writing them down in a secure notebook, or storing them in a secure digital document. It is also a
good idea to use strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts to protect your online security.

A result (of sorts). I was offered a number of HS system updates - this
is about 24 hours after doing a full restore. However, that didn’t seem
to make any difference. Soon after that I started getting a number of
alerts in System Preferences (on both MBAs and my MBP AND my iPhone)
that some iCloud settings needed ‘updating’. I think I’ve entered my Apple ID & password AND my device password on all devices several times
now, ticking various things that don’t seem exactly obvious. It looks
like I have many (many!) duplicate entries in Keychain now and I’m not
sure how to fix that (maybe it’ll fix itself?) But… at least I have Keychain passwords where I wanted them. Fingers crossed!
