Cut off access from a number of some 3rd party clients sometime early
this morning. I don't use it much but using a 3rd party app it's way
easier to filter out crap and curate what you actually want to see!

The Twitterrific people blogged earlier to say they have no idea what's going on, nor is there anyone left at Twitter they can ask. (FWIW the Mac app isn't affected...so far.)

Still no explanation as far as I can see. Tweetbot (Mac/iOS) has gone
down. Now using Fenix (it's quite nice!) on iOS and Tweetdeck on
desktop. Someone suggested it might be clients using more than 100,000 'tokens' (or some such). Suggestion was several of them had 'snuck over
the limit' over the years... but who knows!

I thought Mastodon was meant to be the rising star now?

It is (at least, it's trying to be). Dragging people away from Twitter

No it is not so far.
I'm on Mastodon after I left Twitter a while ago. No comparison so far
and its use is too complicated and its structure weird. I did not find
more than a handful socially important people on this platform.
I set up a Twitter-account again. I do not want to miss this asshole
Trump coming back. And Elon delivers so much fun and entertainment. I
don't wanna miss it.

It is (at least, it's trying to be). Dragging people away from Twitter
when it's become so entrenched isn't an easy task, especially when
signing up to Mastadon isn't as straightforward as people would like.
Still, it's gaining traction and the (limited) number of 3rd party apps
seems to be growing. It'll be interesting to see Tapbots 'Ivory' app -
not least as I was a Tweetbot user for almost 10 years.

Yes, basically what I said.

Ivory is good.
Mastodon is currently a pleasant largely geeky playground, much nicer
than Twitter or FB or indeed almost any social media other than Discord
and Usenet.

+1. And I'm rather appreciating the time I've got back that I was losing to Twitter...

Does it have privacy settings, e.g. To block access from troublesome individuals?

Hm. Just tried this and the 'New Twitter Feed' menu item is greyed out. I may well be missing something.

Find out by joining Mastodon.
Incidentally, NetNewsWire apparently has a Twitter extension, which may be a tolerable way of keeping some sort of access to your Twitter feed if you're already using NNW for RSS. I haven't tried the extension yet, mind.
