• .weblocs and Ventura

From John Hill@21:1/5 to All on Wed Jan 18 16:29:09 2023
I have finally taken the plunge and upgraded to Venture (David Brookes please note). Somechanges I like, some I am prepared to tolerate.

But there is one change I am NOT prepared to tolerate. Since I upgraded, all .webloc files open in Safari. What's worse, the option to change this to my default browser is greyed out and inaccessible.

I refuse to be coerced into using Safari in this way! I've nothing against Safari, it's the principle. Why should Apple dictate what browser I use?

Is there a way to overcome this? If not, I shall have to stop using .webloc files and set up a load of bookmarks instead.

    John.

I'm delighted to hear that, John. (I've been thinking about you since
    your last post here).

Out of interest, which browser do you prefer?

    Have you tried 'Brave'? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(web_browser)

    Download link here ----> https://brave.com/download

    Perhaps this will help:- https://fileinfo.com/extension/webloc

Same as with any other file type: control click (right click) the webloc
file icon, choose "Open with" then Other.

In the list of apps presented select your preferred browser and tick the "Always open with" box.

Nope, does not work with .webloc in Ventura (as the OP already wrote)

Hm. You can right-click, open with whatever, but not set the default app
via the info pane. That is poor. Shall raise a bug.

You're right, apologies to John (the OP). I didn't realise he had gone
via the Get Info route rather than right-click. I saw the phrase "greyed
out", saw that the option wasn't greyed out in the right-click method
and stopped there when a webloc opened fine in another browser because I
didn't want to change my default.

It can be changed but a third-party app is needed.[1]

    1) Go to <https://github.com/Lord-Kamina/SwiftDefaultApps/releases> and download the "SwiftDefaultApps-v2.0.1.zip" file

    2) In your Downloads folder, double-click to expand the zip. You should
    get a folder named "SwiftDefaultApps-v2.0.1"

    3) Go into the folder and double-click the file "SwiftDefaultApps.prefpane"

You will get a warning saying that the "SwiftDefaultApps" preference
pane must be installed before you can use it. Choose the "Install for
    this user only" option.

    4) The new preference pane opens automatically.

    5) Choose "Uniform Type Identifiers" tab at the top

    6) Scroll down the list to "com.apple.web-internet-location" and select it.

    7) In the right-hand pane, under the "Viewer" heading you should see
Safari.app as the default. Choose "Other"

    8) In the Finder window that opens select your preferred alternate
browser. I chose Firefox. Click "Add"

    9) Acknowledge the success popup. The UI goes a bit screwy at this point
as it shows both "Other" and "Firefox.app" as selected. But if you
select an alternate UTI and then come back to
    com.apple-web-internet-location then it displays properly.

And you're done. Double-click a .webloc file and it now opens in Firefox.

To undo at any point in the future: open System Settings, scroll down to "SwiftDefaultApps" which is at the very bottom of the list, find the UTI
as before and change the app back to Safari.

[1] Not strictly true as the change that this app is making behind the
scenes can be done using the AppleScript editor and a < 10 line script
but the prefpane is rather more flexible.

I don't remember ever seeing this. It's over two years ago! But I'm unlikely
to have responded had I done so. I was reeling from Anne's death at the time, in shock.

I watched the Falklands War from a distance (from the top of Portsdown Hilll, in fact). I followed it with great interest - we ll did - but not close up and personal.

We are still good pals. 🙂

    I must check!

I don't remember ever seeing this. It's over two years ago! But I'm unlikely to have responded had I done so. I was reeling from Anne's death at the time, in shock.

I can appreciate that. I have a friend nearby, a Professor of English,
whose wife died just weeks before the Covid lockdown - and just before
my wife suffered from a Widow-maker heart attack. https://chatgpt.com/share/682845f5-9df0-8013-8ab9-69ca672807f2

Fortunately for me, my wife survived and is still looking after me 5+
years later! (but taking lots of pills!)

I watched the Falklands War from a distance (from the top of Portsdown Hilll, in fact). I followed it with great interest - we all did - but not close up and
    personal.

We kept RNAS Culdrose open 24/7 supplying ships by helicopter as they
headed down south. It was a memorable time but some friends I knew well
    never returned.

Did you know that Howard Oakley was there in the Falklands as a naval
    doctor?
