Am I correct in thinking that HLS is the same as Apple’s AAC and there should therefore be no problem?

Not sure about the HLC vs AAC part, but if you’re Airplaying’ing then all the format conversion will be taken care of for you. Won’t be a problem.

Was this why TuneIn lost BBC streams a couple(?) of years ago?

That was UK only. This time it's worldwide. The barker message,
broadcast every six hours since last November, says:
“We are making changes to the way BBC live streams are distributed via 3rdparty services and platforms, and the BBC stream you are currently listening to will stop working by mid-2023. If you are using an internet radio or smart speaker and hearing this message, please contact the manufacturer. If you’re listening on web or mobile, this service is available to stream on BBC Sounds”
The BBC Sounds app is not available for MacOS.

I found the URLs for the BBC's HLS streams and loaded Radio 4 into Music (File: Open
Stream URL...) but it doesn't play. It does play in Safari.
Here's the URL for BBC4 outside the UK:
<http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/nonuk/sbr_low/ak/bbc_radio_fourfm.m3u8>
I'm running Catalina. Anyone care to try if it plays in Music in Big Sur

Yes but Airplay from Safari (Catalina) isn't simple. It involves opening
the Sound pref pane, selecting the Airplay device and not forgetting to deselect Airplay when finished.

I don't subscribe. I had hoped it could simply play my selection of BBC radio station.
No but you can still use it via a web browser. However that is not really what the OP was concerned about. It looks like he’ll need to purchase another radio if he still wants a stand-alone solution.

Presumably you can’t use BBC Sounds abroad unless you try to cheat using some VPN based ruse?

You *can* use BBC Sounds abroad. I'm abroad in Ireland. The live radio stations are censored though. Many live sports events (Radio 5) cannot
be broadcast due to rights restrictions and I have noticed censorship inexplicably sneaking into Radio 4 for non-sports broadcasts.
Re: sports - I'm sure I've listened to footy commentary on the BBC World Service on HF (despite the QRM, QRN and QSB). But then you can still receive them on BBC UK stations, so maybe that's still possible?
