• BBC bye bye

From Michael Phillips@21:1/5 to All on Thu Feb 23 15:48:17 2023
In mid-2003 the BBC will stop Shoutcast transmission of its radio
streams and switch to HLS/DASH. None of my internet radios (Yamaha,
Denon, Tangent) are compatible with these protocols and, as they’re all fairly old, I doubt that the manufacturers will provide a firmware
update. So I’m thinking that I’ll have to resort to Airplay from this
iMac. Fortunately the Denon and Yamaha both have Airplay.
Am I correct in thinking that HLS is the same as Apple’s AAC and there
    should therefore be no problem?

Not sure about the HLC vs AAC part, but if you’re Airplaying’ing then all the format conversion will be taken care of for you. Won’t be a problem.

Was this why TuneIn lost BBC streams a couple(?) of years ago? I'm
kinda sad at the news. I use Reciever on mobile, pretty much just for
SomaFM and 6Music. I caught an advisory statement last month saying
they would stop carrying BBC streams this summer (although I've only
heard that once). They both have their own apps, but still...

Ah, ok. I think the dev for Reciever is made by a German company. Oddly
I've not heard that message again - just that one time. I ususlly

    Ditto, Ventura and M1 Macbook.

Wouldn't do it with Firefox though. Just went round in circles opening new >> windows then asking what to do...

Haven’t tried it as I don’t use FF much these days.

Just added it to FF 110.0 running on Ventura and it works fine. No problems on iOS and
    iPadOS of course :)

Yes but Airplay from Safari (Catalina) isn't simple. It involves opening

Oh yes right, see what you mean. I can't seem to Safari (or any browser)

Very limited radio selection. It's also rubbish at playing music from a NAS - or more accurately compiling a library.

I don't subscribe. I had hoped it could simply play my selection of BBC radio station.

That was UK only. This time it's worldwide. The barker message,
broadcast every six hours since last November, says:
“We are making changes to the way BBC live streams are distributed via
3rdparty services and platforms, and the BBC stream you are currently
listening to will stop working by mid-2023. If you are using an internet
radio or smart speaker and hearing this message, please contact the
manufacturer. If you’re listening on web or mobile, this service is
available to stream on BBC Sounds”

The BBC Sounds app is not available for MacOS.

Does the ios sounds app work on Silicon Macs?

No but you can still use it via a web browser. However that is not really
what the OP was concerned about. It looks like he’ll need to purchase
another radio if he still wants a stand-alone solution.

    Not in Music here.

It was a sad day when iTunes vanished...

And, I always preferred SoundJam anyway!

You can run iTunes on Ventura with Retroactive apparently...
    <https://github.com/cormiertyshawn895/Retroactive>

    Have you tried it?

Just installed it now on a 2012 MBA with Catalina. Very straightforward install & took 20/25 minutes (mostly waiting while it 'did its thing'). Finished and launched fine. Unfortunately I don't have any music on this laptop though.

Perhaps I'll save that for a rainy day.

Presumably you can’t use BBC Sounds abroad unless you try to cheat using

You *can* use BBC Sounds abroad. I'm abroad in Ireland. The live radio
stations are censored though. Many live sports events (Radio 5) cannot
be broadcast due to rights restrictions and I have noticed censorship inexplicably sneaking into Radio 4 for non-sports broadcasts.

That's useful to know - mind you I haven't been out iof the UK for some years now. Re: sports - I'm sure I've listened to footy commentary on the BBC World Service on HF (despite the QRM, QRN and QSB). But then you can still receive them on BBC UK stations, so maybe that's still possible?

It's only some sports events that are blocked e.g. Olympics,
international boxing matches. I don't think, though I'm not sure, that
    domestic events are effected.
