Ok, I've just tried the free version of RootsMagic. What's underneath may be highly impressive for all I know, but the UI makes GEDitCOM look cutting-edge. Eww.

    Eww.

I used to use Reunion, but switched recently to MacFamilyTree 10 as it
had just come out and had a 50% off offer. It has a much slicker UI, and
you can ignore the stupid 3D views. It syncs well with their iOS app.

They seem to have quite frequent sales.

Still using iFamily for Mac here. Also a bit of a relic these days, but
still gets just enough updates to keep it running on each new version of
    macOS.

Thanks all for the suggestions. tbh I'm coming round to thinking there's not a lot wrong with GEDitCOM - there's even a certain charm in its OS9-ishness.

If a MacFamilyTree sale offer comes up I might give it a go, but £70 is a bit hard to justify to myself.

There's a Mac port of GNU Gramps which is free.

Not sure how the UI compares as I've never seen the others.

It does have the advantage/disadvantage that it won't spam your data out
    to other genealogists.

I agree. IIRC the half price deal for MFT was cheaper than upgrading
Reunion, so it made sense to me.

I've used Reunion, in its various versions, for over 20 years and see no good reason to change now. Probably the most comprehensive packet available on the Mac.

With ReunionTouch on your iPad and iPhone you can update your family history anywhere and anytime.

I've used Reunion, in its various versions, for over 20 years and see no good reason to change now. Probably the most comprehensive packet available on the Mac.

The main issues I have with Reunion are - in no particular order:

    * old fashioned/dated UI that's functional but that's as far as it goes

    * an expensive upgrade at the time

    * not very good at tracking changes to macOS - they have an old codebase
with a lot of technical debt (scary in itself) and were slow to go to
Cocoa, 64-bits, and M1 - and at certain points in its life the app would
NOT WORK on new Macs because of this.

    * apparently no developers, so there are few incremental bug fixes and
just a "big bang" new release when they rehire their contractors.

I did like it when it was pretty much the only game in town, but they've
got good, if not better, competition now.

Hurrah for GEDCOM making it so easy to switch between systems!

Thanks Chris. The more I look at GEDitCOM the more of its hidden powers I discover, but... half-price MacFamilyTree may be too tempting to resist.

It's great to hear that you found a genealogy software that works well for you. MacFamilyTree 10 sounds like a solid choice with a slick UI and good syncing capabilities with their iOS app. Frequent sales can also be a bonus for those looking to save
some money. Thanks for sharing your experience and recommendation! You can also check findings https://qsmart.qa/
