From David Kennedy@21:1/5 to All on Wed Apr 5 21:25:12 2023
I was asked today if there is a good reliable UK based email service and
    please don't say Google?
And, I had no real answer. Obviously there are many other services but how
good and how reliable I have absolutely no idea.
Is there some reference for this?

Do you want a free service? As they say, if you aren't paying for it you're the product...

I use Mythic Beasts (UK) and Fastmail (not UK but GDPR compliant), which are both good and reliable, but not free.

    google :)

does it have to be uk based? fastmail is based in australia and highly regarded. there are many others. are there any specific features that
you (or the person who asked you) want?

That is becoming increasingly more obvious though so people _should_ know by now.

Well, I'm using Google but that's a legacy thing. PlusNet have never been that good with email and I chose the easy route 15 years ago and have just chugged along with it since.

Not sure, simply repeating the question. Personally I have no knowledge of how good or bad these services are and a quick search (Google) revealed 20 different opinions in as many results.

I'm not even sure how you would score an email provider? Storage, reliability, security, what order do you place them in?

I use A&A - been with them for years, never had a problem. Also not free, but not exactly expensive.

I've been using Plusnet's cheapest tariff for aboput 10 years (no longer available to new users) and it has been fairly trouble-free apart from
Plusnet being black-listed by some ISPs for a while last year.

I gave up with them years ago when there were frequent* problems.

I've been using gmx.com for a number of years. Free email is very reliable and largely spam free.
Not UK based though, GMX is part of 1&1and is based in Germany.

I was with them for a couple of years. Their service is really top-notch, but they *are* on the expensive side, I found.

I use GMX for more than 20years. It even beats my top notch hoster
Hostpoint in Switzerland. GMX is reliable and offers very powerful
features like real filtering and more. Even encrypted messages can be
sent over the web interface for those who need it. Even the use of a CalDAV-Server is free.

I would never trust a supplier in the five-eyes countries. Never. The
Continent has a completely different privacy and data protection culture.

Thanks for all the replies. Food for thought, I'll pass it along and I'll be doing some investigating myself once I recover from the Easter deluge...
