+1 for 4K. Free & very easy to use. I've downloaded over 100 films off

Big recommendation for Downie. It not only handles YouTube videos, but many other websites from which it's difficult to download video.

Never tried 4kdownload, but I've found VLC to be awful for anything except playback of arcane formats.

it can download just about any video (and also audio files) from nearly
any site, at various quality levels.

    if a site isn't officially supported, there's a user-guided option to
    extract it.

another option is youtube-dlp, which also supports more than just
youtube, however it requires the command line.

I tried Downie and it seemed to answer my requirements, except one. I want to download YT videos to play them on my smart TV for my wife. If I play YT on the smart TV via the normal programming, the adverts are terrible. But my smart TV requires that USB memory sticks are formatted in NTFS So I format the USB stick in NTFS and having downloaded the video on my iMac, I find the Mac will not copy the downloaded video to the USB stick.

Am I missing something here? I don't claim to be a nerd or tech wizard, so that's quite possible. Can someone help me with this?

If you don’t mind paying, Paragon offer a suitable solution.

Watching YouTube App from your iOS Devices (iphone, ipad, ipod, etc) on
your smart TV is a breeze to do. You can pair it by pushing the pairing
icon on your youtube app (make sure you have updated version) or you can
do it manually by getting a code from your smart TV and entering it into
your connected TV settings option from your YouTube app.

ntfs is a proprietary microsoft format which they refuse to license.

third parties have reverse engineered it and it mostly works.
unfortunately, mostly means there can be issues.

because of that, apple only supports reading ntfs, thereby avoiding any
risk of data loss by writing.

there are paid options that support writing, however, that does incur a
risk. for the use case you describe, that is minor.

another option is to format the usb stick with exfat if your tv
    supports that.

even better is to use airplay and not use usb sticks at all.

There are ... various methods to get rid of ads. But sounds like you
log in to YT on the TV? If you don't want to pay full price for premium
you could opt to buy it in another country. Less than £2 a month for
family sub (I bought mine via India a couple of years ago).

Big recommendation for Downie. It not only handles YouTube videos, but many
other websites from which it's difficult to download video.

Just trying the trial version. I'm finding that YT downloads slow down to a >> crawl
towards their end. Is this normal or is it perhaps a feature of the trial?

try it again. he just released a new version and youtube is much faster
to start and doesn't slow down in the middle of a download.

Congfirmed. Just downloaded and played a selection of short movies with no problem.
    Thanks for the info.

There seem to be quite a few methods of doing this according to Google.

There's youtube-dl if you don't mind the command line.

Replaced with yt-dlp, which is a bit more up to date.

Indeed it is. If you don’t have Python3 installed, you’ll get prompted to download the XC CLI tools but that’s no big deal and quite handy to have.
