Just take over your account/profile(s) with the migration tool and build
the rest of the news system from scratch. The risk that you import
legacy problems is much smaller. At least that is the way I do it usually.

thanks for the suggestion - what is the "migration tool" - is this something that will be obvious when I am first setting up the new machine?

IIRC yes. At the moment I'm 800 km away from my Macs which makes it a
bit difficult to help you the way I would want to. I use my Linux Dell
    here in France.

Oh and will things like my keychain easily be migrated? Think I need to read up on this :)

    Yes! Definitely!

Looks like this is where I need to start - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/102613

    Very good starting point!
Perhaps that gives you additional support

As Jörg says, just use Migration Assistant. It'll not bring over your
Brew setup so you'd need to redo it anyway.

On the old Mac, make sure its Time Machine backup is (a) complete (b) up
to date (c) doesn't have any exceptions.

On the new one, MA will bring 90% of stuff along but iCloud synced
things will likely lag; last time I did one it took three days for the
Photos to complete. As with the Time Machine thread, patience is a
virtue - just let it do things at its own speed since any messing with
it can only make things worse; leave the machine plugged in at nights
    while it does it.

DHL arrived with the eagerly-anticipated device!

Thanks for your and Jorg's advice - one more question (for now) - I'm coming from an Intel-based machine to an M3 - will it be copying applications, will they still work? Or will it intelligently go "oh this is Chrome for a different architecture, I'll download the corresponding version for M3"?

Or am I overthinking / misunderstanding?

Mseries will run all Intel apps; upgrading to an M-version of each app
will be on the app's own updater to do or not. App Store stuff will go
Mseries if available when they install.

Also just hinking about the quantity of stuff I have downloaded related to Laravel & associated stuff which is "built" after a download - TBH I have no idea what's there, if it's portable across o/s & chips...

Guess you'll have fun finding out :)

    Cheers - Jaimie

Reinstall them. Newer versions of software run in most cases natively on
    the M3.

If the intel version is still available it'll pull down that one, so you'll need to manually replace them with the Apple Silicon version where it
    exists.

Will you, please, clarify your statement?

    "Pull down" ........ from where?

Thanks for all the pointers - decided to migrate piecemeal so that I don't replicate 9 years of "mess" :)

I've been using MA for over 15 years - dread to think about the lingering rubbish, but it doesn't seem to do any harm.
Worst issue is apps - over 200, most of which I never use.
