• Keyboard viewer

    From D.M. Procida@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jun 1 16:09:59 2024
It used to be that the Keyboard Viewer would show you hat keys were being pressed - handy when you were testing a keyboard.

Is there something that will do the same useful job?

It's still there. A bit hidden though.

Open Keyboard in System Preferences, then in the 'Input' section, click
the Edit button (I have just the British keyboard selected, so that's
next to the button on mine).

At the top of the next box is 'Show input menu in menu bar'. That'll get
you back the old keyboard viewer item in your menu bar.

It does - but what I want is a keyboard viewer that shows an on-screen representation of the actual keyboard, and what keys are being pressed on it, and it doesn't seem to do that any more

(Well, it does show when the modifier keys are pressedm but that's it.)

Yes, that's the keyboard I see when I open it up. I don't get that row
of words though, just a 'Suggestions' box.

If I hit keys, or combos of keys, the appropriate keypresses light up,
and that's all it does there for me. Except if I have a text entry open somewhere, such as this newsgroup page, it enters the text I type here,
and lights up the button on the Keyboard Viewer.

This is with a MacBook Pro, Sonoma 14.5, and it represents the physical keyboard quite closely.

Perhaps have a try exploring the different settings in the pop down
panel (click on the (…) button at the top right). Also perhaps check
what settings you have for the system accents.

Otherwise, don't know, it's not something I use a lot, I just found it
by clicking a few buttons this afternoon.

Also 14.5 here, but it barely resembles my actual keyboard. I have a wired Apple extended keyboard, whereas the keyboard shown on the screen looks more like that on my Macbook Air. It does "light up", though. Why did they change it? On Catalina etc the keyboard shown was like my actual one.

I isn't great for sure. I would think a simple reverse colours would

    I'm using dark mode here.

I use dark mode, and spotted the highlight straight away. It's not a
great visual though when in actual use.

Hmm, yes, that's silly, I just switched to light mode, and the keyboard
viewer doesn't follow the theme. You have to manually switch it in the
viewer. In light mode, it shows a shows a greyed key with the red
outline, and is much more visible.

I suspect it's showing the same greyed key in dark mode, but as you say,
is then being masked, as the keys are already a darker colour (mid
grey), and the grey is only slightly different to the surrounding colour (black). The keypress indicator is just slightly lighter grey than the
    normal view.

In light mode, the whole keyboard view is slightly off-white, and the
keypress shows the same mid-grey as above, but is more noticeable.
