• MacBook A1278 late 2008 - any use to anyone?

    From D.M. Procida@21:1/5 to All on Sun Jun 2 11:31:39 2024
4GB RAM, 160GB SSD, in remarkably good condition with a nice bright screen, PSU, etc etc.

The battery should be replaced, it holds a charge but not very well.

If anyone would like it, you're welcome to it.

That is very kind offer, Daniele.

Are you willing to send it to me if I pay the post and packaging costs 'up-front'?

Ufortunately unless it can reasonably comfortably run an OS supported with security updates, and a secure modern browser, I think it's only really going to be of any interest to a hobbyist.

Maybe there's a suitable Linux distribution that would suit it? It would probably need a fairly "light" distro such as Lubuntu?

We ought to have laws requiring that device manufacturers support their

I must admit, I was kind of half interested, but only as a bit of interest
    to mess about with.

I wonder if that might be worth running OCLP on, and seeing how far up the
OS ladder it could be pushed. I’ve run my last two desktop devices* on it, and been quite successful.

    https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

I know it reports as running without SIP (is that relevant anyway on that
older machine?) if you look at system reports. However, it’s not entirely true, as OCLP only partially disables SIP. I also use the Objective-See security stuff, and occasionally run Bitdefender, just as a bit of added
    cover.

I’d guess that the more modern OS and softwares, with reduced SIP, may
still be more secure than really out of date OS and softwares.

    * Well, my old iMac 2013, and the MacBook Pro 2017 my daughter gave me,
have been fine on the latest OS’s under OCLP. The MacBook is running Sonoma at the moment, and it has the odd hissy fit, but generally work OK, and
allows me to manage my Photos library, and run as a media server for HomeSharing, TV, Music and Plex. Some operations are a little easier on the macOS setup, but not enough to justify buying a newer desktop/laptop
    device.

My 2020 iPad Pro is still a faster machine, and the one I use most by a
    long way.

You need to be careful with MacBooks as there seems to be WiFi issues
with some models. My 2017 MacBook Air which uses the Broadcom 43xx card
when upgraded to Sonoma via OCLP will not connect via WiFi. So I've gone
back to Monterey but may try another upgrade when I've done a bit more
    research into OCLP WiFi issues.

Oh yes, it's very much a YMMV thing, and RTFM, and Caveat Emptor etc.

They frequently start off with a few models that struggle with some
issues - usually the same culprits with certain graphics and network
cards. They seem to get fixed, but almost always suffer after an OS
update, and can be a few days (or a little longer) before OCLP can
react. I always check the forums before installing an OS update.

Interestingly, that's the same WiFi controller I have here, and not seen
a problem with it so far. Although I also use a USB-Ethernet adapter too
(but not always), so might have missed that playing up.

I have to say though, the effort they put into it is immense for
something that is free to use.

If you have an old machine, and don't mind having a go, it's certainly
worth a punt to squeeze a bit longer use, rather than bin it.

It can be taken up to the end of El Capitan.
The Safari that comes with that with that does not work
with any modern site at all. The Firefox is better, but not by much.

OTOH it is quite suitable to post to UKCSM, with MacSoup for example.

We ought to have laws requiring that device manufacturers support their devices with 25-year software updates.

The effort, in cost of manpower, would be out of all proportion
to the value of the remaining machines.
Also, those older machines are energetically very inefficient,
in CO2 emitted/bit crunched, compared to more modern machines

Same with Google Chrome. Even Google ended macOS Mojave support for
    Chrome. :(

However, Linux can run in these old Intel Macs. Just be sure to get the ones that can run low end models.

The “latest” macOS being 10.11.6 for the model in question!
